Listening to the Mind Listening

The following explains what mappings have been chosen for a sonification of several data channels from set containing a recording of the neural activity of a person listening to a piece of music. This piece, and also the sonification, is exactly 300 seconds long. My aim is to provide a sonification/composition that can be created in (near) real-time and takes its title literally. This is done b...

Design of system for studying sound externalization in binaural listening

In Augmented Reality Audio (ARA) applications the real sound environment of the user is extended with virtual objects. The real environment is reproduced as a pseudo-acoustic world via a special ARA headset that consists of binaural microphones and headphones. In augmented reality audio, one of the problems is a perceived effect of having the virtual source localized inside the listener’s head....

Listening Otherwise: Playing with Sound Vibration

What does « listening otherwise » mean without ears? How to access and put into practice the vibratory domain, for persons who are either handicapped or not? The devices for “listening through touch” transmit sound signals via materials thanks to a custom-designed computer program and adapted interfaces. Henceforth, one can hear sounds through the body. Listening by touch modifies sound and spa...

Designing Robots with Movement in Mind

This paper makes the case for designing interactive robots with their expressive movement in mind. As people are highly sensitive to physical movement and spatiotemporal affordances, well-designed robot motion can communicate, engage, and offer dynamic possibilities beyond the machines’ surface appearance or pragmatic motion paths. We present techniques for movement centric design, including ch...
